Japanese class: The final frontier

The semester: Fall 2006.

The class: Beginning Japanese I.

The teacher: 114 miles away at a different university.

The amount of time before I realized there was no way I was going to be able to pass a Japanese-language course taught by a person via a webcam and decided to drop the class: 24 minutes.

At least I got a Star-Trek-inspired doodle out of it.

The Frog Man

This fall 2006 math class doodle looks to me to be a poster for a noir film. With that in mind, here is my take on “The Frog Man,” inspired in title only by Dashiell Hammett’s “The Thin Man.”

  • Harold Goines: Door-to-door laundry detergent salesman. Likes wine, women, and professional ostrich racing. Dislikes getting shot in the face. Shown here after being plugged in the mug by an unknown assailant, the shadowy figure fleeing on the sidewalk.
  • Richard T. Frog: Private detective, shown here at left. Ex-cop. Likes eating flies and smoking cheap cigars. Dislikes getting framed for murder, a situation he quickly finds himself in.
